Aubrey's Story

Together We Can Make a Difference

Aubrey Cunningham was a very quiet, gentle young man born on April 18, 1992, in Mobile, Alabama. He was the first born of five children, his parents later moved to New York City where Aubrey lived out the rest of his life. Some of the things that Aubrey loved was helping others, being apart of nature, gardening, and science. He was a highly intelligent young man, he was considered a gifted kid by many.

The Moment That Inspired a Mission

On May 28, 2006, Aubrey went on a picnic with four other youths and four counselors. The next day, our family received the devastating call that Aubrey had drowned in the Hudson River while under the care of those entrusted to protect him. When Aubrey was found, the other youths and counselors had left the institution and were not located until days later.

That moment shattered our family, but we refused to let tragedy be the end of Aubrey’s story.

Aubrey’s Foundation was born from our pain and built with purpose. In his memory, we are creating the support, supervision, opportunity, and compassion we believe every person deserves, especially our youth and those most vulnerable in our communities.

Today, we invite you to help us turn Aubrey’s legacy into lasting change. Your donation, partnership, or time can help us create safe spaces, strengthen families, support those in need, and give young people opportunities for a brighter future.

Aubrey’s life mattered. Help us make his legacy matter in the lives of others.
